Martinique Vacations

Martinique offers a beach vacation destination with a lush mountain backdrop. Enjoy the cuisine and refined elegance of this French speaking island. Mount Pelee is the highest point on the island at 4,660 ft. and offers great hiking, canyoning, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities available. Scuba diving tours are available with clear water, shipwrecks, coral reefs, and colorful fish.

The main resort area for beach vacations in Martinique can be found on the southern coast where the water is less rugged compared to the Atlantic side of the island. The beaches near Sainte-Anne are popular and sometimes crowded. There also is a very popular Club Med Resort north of Sainte-Anne. You really would be hard pressed to find a bad beach anywhere from the capital Fort-a-France through Les Trois-llets to the southern peninsula beach of Anse Trabaud.

Shopping is plentiful in Martinique as french perfumes, leather, crystal and other items can be found at some of the lowest prices in the Caribbean. The main shopping area is in Fort-a-France along rues Antoine Siger and Victor Schoelcher. The restaurants on Martinique offer Caribbean specialties along with French Creole dishes. Most of the restaurants in Martinique add a service fee to the bill.

The official languages are French and Creole. The main unit of currency is the French franc. The airport is Lamentin Airport just east of the capital, Fort-a-France.
