Travel to the Dominican Republic to find a great selection of resorts on some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic is the eastern half of the island it shares with Haiti. The Dominican Republic offers historical charm and beautiful beaches backed by lush green mountains.
Punta Cana is located on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic and has a beach that stretches for more than 20 miles. The Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana is one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic. Many European tourists flock to this destination as they enjoy the ample sunshine and the lack of rain. The beach is the main draw as there is little to offer in the way of shopping or activities.
Other resort areas can be found in Puerto Plata in the north, La Romana in the southeast, and Santo Domingo the capital on the southern coast. The interior areas of the island offer ecotourism vacations including hiking, bird watching, and caving.
Scuba diving and snorkeling is not as available in the Dominican Republic compared to other Caribbean islands. The main area for underwater exploring is the reefs around Catalina Island near La Romana. The area near Samana peninsula is also worthy of a visit for diving and snorkeling. The best beaches are near Puerto Plata including the 75 miles of beaches known as the Amber Coast and the resort area of Playa Dorada. Puerto Plata is back dropped by Mount Isabel de Torres (2,565 ft.) and the "Christ the Redeemer" statue at the peak.
The primary language is spanish. The main unit of currency is the peso. Santo Domingo (Las Americas International Airport), Puerto Plata (La Union International Airport), Punt Cana, and La Romana all have airports. Santa Domingo has excellent shopping with the highlights being cigars, rum, and other duty free items.
