Cozumel is an island off the Mexican Yucatan peninsula just southeast of Playa del Carmen. It is best known as a scuba diving and snorkeling destination because of the beautiful coral formations and colorful marine life of the Palancar Reef. Known as the second largest reef in the world, scuba divers flock to this location from all over the world. You will have no problem finding a dive shop or a diving tour operator.

Many travelers enjoy Cozumel because it combines the luxury resort area of San Miguel de Cozumel with undeveloped areas waiting to be explored. The beaches are much better in Playa del Carmen and Cancun because the waters off Cozumel are full of coral and choppy Atlantic waters.
