Warm Vacations
Is Bali a safe place to travel to?
I have been doing some research on Bali because I might go there in late March. It is a dream trip with many positives, but the main negative is the safety issue.
I'm wondering if anyone has been to Bali recently and could offer a recent perspective on whether or not Bali is a safe place to travel to.
From the research I have done, I have found that there have been a few very negative things that have happened in Bali, but overall, most people don't have many problems with safety while traveling in Bali.
The biggest concern is terrorism in Bali. There was a huge bombing in the Kuta beach area in 2002 that killed many people. After this bombing the number of Austrailians and Americans going to Bali dropped sharply. There was another, smaller, bombing in Bali in 2005. Since then, the only bombing in the area was a recent bombing in Jakarta.
The terrorism concern is a real one. While the island of Bali is primarily the home of the Hindu minority in Indonesia, there still are Muslim radicals who seek to kill westerners throughout Indonesia. The Indonesian government has done a good job of cracking down on the terrorist networks, but the risk of terrorism is still there.
This is also true of places such as New York and London. There have been terrorist bombings in these cities and there are still threats of more terrorism. Would I avoid these cities due to a concern over terrorism? Should I avoid Bali due to a concern over terrorism?
Another concern is crime. It isn't a huge factor in Bali, but there have been recent reports of criminals targeting westerners in Bali. One Austrailian woman was taken hostage in her hotel room as people robbed her. From what I understand, the criminals took a lot of valuable things and money. I'm not sure the crime in Bali is different compared to any other destination. We are always reminded not to flash wealth when visiting destinations with deep levels of poverty.
My final concern about going to Bali is diseases. It is a tropical area so dengue fever is present. I'm not a fan of mosquitos anyway so I always take precautions to avoid stings. I will plan to stay inside during the evening mosquito feeding times. There also has been a recent outbreak of Legionaires deisease in Bali, but it primarily attacks older adults.
I'm pretty sure that the safety concerns will not stop me from visiting Bali. They will always be in the back of my mind which will cause me to watch what I do and say. I don't plan to spend much time in the large tourist beach area of Kuta. I will try to stay out of nightclubs and busy restaurants frequented by westerners. I will try to always be with someone I know and meet more people so I can travel in a group. I will avoid mosquitos as much as possible.
Would you travel to Bali considering these safety concerns?

I just got back from Bali. I felt very safe there except for when I was in Kuta. Kuta is such a crowded urban area and of course it was the site of the Bali bombings in the early 2000's. I still didn't feel any threats from the local people, but I could see why the small streets and open front bars were susceptible for such a violent terrorist attack.
Overall, Bali is a very safe place. My main objections were to the trash that is everywhere as the Balinese don't seem to understand the benefit of putting trash in a garbage can.
I also had trouble seeing all of the mothers with small babies begging in the streets. Most of the information we read said it is better to donate to charities instead of prmoting a begging culture by giving them money directly, but it was just a sad situation overall.
