I'm considering a trip to the Dominican Republic. I hear it has great beaches and has lower prices compared to some other places in the Caribbean.
Has anyone been to the Dominican Republic who could provide some suggestions?
I know there are a lot of mega resorts, but I usually like to stay in smaller resorts so I can save money and try many restaurants and bars in the area.
Do the big tourist areas like Punta Cana have small resorts and local restaurants or is it just a line of huge mega resorts similar to Cancun?
I've never been to the Dominican Republic, but I know that Punta Cana is a large tourist area with losts of all inclusive resorts. There also is La Romana which is a urban area on the southern coast with a few resorts nearby and Puerto Plata which is a beach area on the north coast with a Trent Jones golf course in the area.
I'm not sure if Punta Cana is just big resorts or if there are local bars and restaurants you could visit. The best beach in the Punta Cana area is Bavaro beach which is on the north end of the Punta Cana area.
Punta Cana is primarily a string of huge all inclusive resorts. If you are looking for local bars and restaurants on a nice beach, try Playa del Carmen or Negril.
Were the restaurants you tried inside the all inclusive resort? Are there good restaurants available outside of the resorts?
I'm thinking about renting a place in Punta Cana, but I'm trying to find out if there will be grocery stores, restaurants, and bars available that are not within the all inclusive resorts.
