I don't know if this will be much of a discussion, but I was wondering why so many people seem to spend their vacations with their heads in a book.

It seems like we can enter into the fantasy world of books anywhere.  If I'm going to immerse myself into the world of Harry Potter or some self help book, it seems like I might as well do this in my bed, in a park, on my lunch break, etc...

To me, being on vacation is a fantasy world with no need to enter into an additional fantasy world of a book.

I guess I understand that reading is very relaxing for people.  I also understand that vacation is a chance to have a ton of free time where some solid reading can take place.

Since I see so many other people doing it, I thought to myself that maybe I should find a book for my next vacation.  However, I don't think I would read very much of the book.  Even if I just plan to lounge around all day on a beach, I still would rather just listen to the waves, look at the water, have a few drinks, and spend time thinking.

Do you usually read books on vacation?  Why?  What do you enjoy reading on vacation?

I think it matters what people do for a living and what they enjoy doing. People who read or type a lot for their jobs probably don't want to look at words and letters while on vacation. Also, some people really enjoy reaidng and do it any chance they get.

To some people, just sitting on a beach "thinking" sounds completely boring. It is the same reason some people always have the television on. Their time might be better spent with their children or doing something constructive, but people really enjoy just immersing themselves in the stories and information books/television delivers.

For me, I only read on vacation if I have a book that has been waiting for my time. If there is nothing I want to read, I don't search for something just to have something to read on vacation.
I love to read books on vacation. It is the only time I get where I can read a few chapters at a time and really get into what I am reading. Plus, a shady spot on the beach with the waves crashing in is a perfect reading spot. When I finish a chapter, I can go for a swim or go get a drink and a meal.
